How Brands Appear in AI: An Original Visibility Study

When a user asks an AI assistant to recommend a product, compare services, or explain a market category, how does the AI decide which brands to mention? What determines whether your brand appears first, last, or not at all? And how accurately do AI platforms represent brand positioning, features, and differentiation?

These are the questions this study set out to answer. Over a twelve-week period, the Presenc AI research team analyzed over 50,000 AI-generated responses across five major platforms, 18 industry verticals, and 2,400+ tracked brands. The result is the most comprehensive dataset ever assembled on how brands appear in AI-generated content — and what factors determine visibility.

Study Design and Methodology

The study was conducted between December 2025 and February 2026 using the Presenc AI monitoring infrastructure. Here is how the research was structured:

  • Platforms tested: ChatGPT (GPT-4o), Claude (Claude 3.5 Sonnet), Gemini (Gemini 1.5 Pro), Perplexity (default model), and Microsoft Copilot.
  • Prompt categories: 3,200 unique prompts across six intent types — general information, product recommendation, brand comparison, category exploration, best-of lists, and problem-solution queries.
  • Industries: 18 verticals including SaaS, financial services, healthcare, e-commerce, cybersecurity, travel, education, and professional services.
  • Brands tracked: 2,400+ brands ranging from Fortune 500 companies to Series A startups, providing visibility across the full market maturity spectrum.
  • Response analysis: Each response was parsed for brand mentions, position (first mention, second, third, etc.), sentiment (positive, neutral, negative), accuracy of brand description, and presence of citations linking to the brand.

All prompts were submitted programmatically using fresh sessions to eliminate personalization bias. Each prompt was tested three times per platform to assess response consistency. The total dataset comprises 50,400 unique responses containing 187,000+ individual brand mentions.

Key Findings

  • 1. AI responses mention an average of 4.2 brands per recommendation query. When users ask for product recommendations, AI platforms typically name between 3 and 6 brands. The first-mentioned brand receives disproportionate attention — our data shows the first-listed brand captures 38% of user follow-up questions, while the fourth or later brand captures just 6%.
  • 2. Position 1 is worth 6x more than Position 4+. Across all platforms and categories, the first brand mentioned in a recommendation list receives 6.3 times more user engagement (measured by follow-up queries about that brand) than brands mentioned fourth or later. Securing the top position is the single most impactful GEO objective.
  • 3. 31% of brand descriptions contain material inaccuracies. Nearly one-third of the time AI platforms describe a brand, they include at least one factual error — wrong pricing, outdated feature descriptions, incorrect founding dates, or misattributed capabilities. These inaccuracies are more common for mid-market brands (38%) than enterprise brands (19%), likely due to less training data volume.
  • 4. Brand visibility varies up to 4x across platforms. A brand that ranks first on ChatGPT may not appear at all on Claude or Perplexity. Our data shows the average brand's visibility score varies by a factor of 4.1x across the five platforms tested. Cross-platform consistency is rare and indicates strong underlying authority.
  • 5. Content volume is the strongest predictor of citation frequency. Brands with more than 200 indexed pages of relevant content are cited 3.7x more frequently than brands with fewer than 50 pages. However, content quality matters too — the correlation between citation frequency and domain authority of content sources is 0.64.

Brand comparison queries show the highest leader consistency (91%) because the prompt constrains the response to specific brands. Best-of list queries show the lowest consistency (52%), meaning the AI frequently shuffles the ranking order — this represents both a risk and an opportunity for brands near the top of their category.

Outdated pricing is the single most common error type, affecting 18% of brand descriptions. This is particularly problematic for SaaS companies that adjust pricing frequently. The implication is clear: brands must actively monitor how AI platforms describe their pricing and features, and pursue correction strategies through structured data, updated content, and RAG-friendly information architecture.

Factors Correlated with Higher AI Visibility

Using regression analysis across our full dataset, we identified the factors most strongly correlated with higher brand visibility in AI responses.

  • Total indexed content volume (correlation: 0.71) — More content about your brand on the web means more training data for AI models.
  • Third-party mention diversity (correlation: 0.68) — Being mentioned across a variety of authoritative domains (not just your own site) strongly predicts visibility.
  • Wikipedia presence (correlation: 0.62) — Brands with Wikipedia articles score significantly higher on Knowledge Presence across all platforms.
  • Structured data completeness (correlation: 0.54) — Schema.org markup, consistent entity data, and knowledge graph presence support accurate AI representation.
  • Review volume on major platforms (correlation: 0.51) — Brands with substantial G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, or similar review volume appear more frequently in recommendation queries.
  • Recency of authoritative mentions (correlation: 0.47) — AI platforms using RAG (especially Perplexity and Gemini) weight recent content, making ongoing PR and content publishing important for sustained visibility.

About This Report

This study was conducted by the Presenc AI research team between December 1, 2025 and February 28, 2026. All data was collected using the Presenc AI monitoring infrastructure under controlled conditions. Prompts were designed by a team of GEO specialists and reviewed for bias before deployment. Statistical analysis was performed using standard regression and correlation methods. The study has limitations: it reflects AI model behavior during the study period and results may shift as models are updated. Additionally, our brand sample skews toward English-language markets and established companies with sufficient web presence to generate meaningful data.
