Step 4: Measure Share of Voice Across Platforms
Share of voice (SOV) in AI responses is your most important competitive metric. It measures the percentage of relevant prompts where your brand appears compared to competitors. Calculate it by dividing the number of prompts where your brand is mentioned by the total number of category-relevant prompts tested.
Track SOV separately for each platform. You might have 40% SOV on Perplexity (where your content is well-cited) but only 10% on ChatGPT (where your training data presence is weak). Platform-specific SOV tells you where to focus optimization efforts.
Compare your SOV against your top three to five competitors. If a competitor has 60% SOV and you have 15%, that gap represents a quantifiable business risk — especially as more users shift research from Google to AI assistants.
