At the start of 2026, Claude was a line most analytics dashboards grouped under "other." By May it was the second-largest AI referral source in several independent datasets. No other platform grew its outbound traffic that fast this year.
The Growth, Month by Month
SE Ranking tracks Claude referrals as a share of all web traffic across 101,574 websites:
| Month (2026) | Claude share of total web traffic | Change |
|---|---|---|
| January | 0.0029% | Baseline |
| February | 0.0049% | +69% |
| March | 0.0127% | +159%, the largest single-month jump on record |
| April | 0.0141% | +11%, and +386% since January |
ChatGPT's share grew 1.53% over the same four months. Claude's April share was highest in the US (0.0186%), then the EU (0.0100%) and the UK (0.0054%).
Three Datasets, Same Direction
| Source | What it found |
|---|---|
| Previsible, 166 sites, Nov 2024 to May 2026 | Claude referral sessions up 64x; Claude passed Perplexity in March 2026 and stayed ahead, with 8,528 sessions in May against Perplexity's 6,788 |
| Goodie, brand-averaged panel | Claude went from 1.4% of AI referrals (May to Aug 2025) to 18.5% (Mar to Apr 2026), second only to ChatGPT |
| SE Ranking, 101,574 sites | +386% share of web traffic, January to April 2026 |
The absolute levels differ because the panels differ (see why AI referral studies disagree). The direction and the March inflection show up in all three.
What Drove It
User growth. Similarweb put Claude at 11.3 million mobile daily active users in early March, and Sensor Tower's State of AI report had Claude at 10.3% of AI assistant usage and about 245 million monthly users by May. More users asking questions means more outbound clicks.
The March migration. SE Ranking attributes the March spike to users moving to Claude after Anthropic's public stance on AI safety. That timing matches the download data, with Claude's US daily downloads passing ChatGPT's in late February.
Web search as a default. Claude answers increasingly include cited sources. Each citation is a clickable link, so higher usage of search-grounded answers turns directly into referrals. See Claude citation patterns.
Who Gets the Clicks
Claude's audience skews toward developers, analysts, and knowledge workers, and Claude Sonnet 5 became the default model on Free and Pro in June. That profile shows in the referral data: brand-averaged panels, where B2B and software brands count equally with consumer sites, show Claude far higher than session-weighted panels do. If you sell software, data, or professional services, Claude is plausibly your second AI channel already. If you sell consumer goods, it is probably still small.
Brand Visibility Implications
Most brands built their AI visibility baselines on ChatGPT. Claude retrieves and cites differently: it favours documentation, technical explainers, and primary sources over listicles, and it hedges more when evidence is thin. A brand that ranks well in ChatGPT can still be missing from Claude answers. With Claude now a meaningful source of traffic, it needs its own prompt set, its own baseline, and its own reporting line, not a blended multi-platform score that hides it. See Claude brand visibility and Claude Sonnet 5.
Methodology
Figures come from published first-party and panel studies, each cited at the point of use: Google's I/O 2026 keynote and Q2 2026 earnings remarks, Previsible's AI Traffic Report, SE Ranking's Claude traffic research, Goodie's AI Search Traffic Report, Seer Interactive, Ahrefs, Pew Research Center, and Semrush. We report each study's own date range next to its numbers because these studies measure different panels over different windows. Where they disagree, we show the disagreement rather than averaging it away. Figures are as of September 2026 and are reviewed quarterly.
How Presenc AI Helps
Presenc AI tracks Claude as a separate platform, with its own prompt sets and competitor benchmarks, so you can see whether Claude mentions you before its referral traffic shows up, or fails to.
