| Vendor | Anthropic |
| Family | Claude 5 series |
| Launched | Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5 on June 30, 2026, succeeding Sonnet 4.6. It became the default model on the Free and Pro plans at launch and is also available to Max, Team, and Enterprise users, which makes it the most widely served Claude model by user count. |
| Context window | 1,000,000 tokens by default. Unlike Sonnet 4.6, where the 1M window was an opt-in extended variant, 1M is both the default and the maximum on Sonnet 5, with no smaller-context variant. Maximum output is 128,000 tokens. |
| Pricing | Introductory pricing of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens through August 31, 2026, moving to $3 / $15 after that date. Prompt caching cuts input cost by up to 90 percent and batch processing by 50 percent. |
| Access channels | Anthropic API (claude-sonnet-5), Claude.ai on Free and Pro as the default model plus Max, Team, and Enterprise, Claude Code, and the Claude Platform. Cloud marketplace availability follows the usual Bedrock, Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry pattern. |
Notable Benchmarks
Anthropic reports 46.8 percent on Humanity's Last Exam with tools and 78.5 percent on OSWorld-Verified, alongside gains on BrowseComp. The emphasis across the release material is agentic: planning, browser and terminal tool use, and autonomous multi-step execution rather than single-turn answer quality.
Strengths
Agentic execution over long horizons, 1M context as the default rather than a premium tier, materially better tool use and computer use than Sonnet 4.6, and performance approaching Opus-class capability at mid-tier pricing. Anthropic also reports a lower overall rate of undesirable behaviours than Sonnet 4.6.
Limitations
The introductory price expires August 31, 2026, and the 50 percent step up to $3 / $15 will change the economics of high-volume monitoring pipelines built during the introductory window. A 1M-token default context also means naive prompting can carry a much larger bill than the headline rate implies.
Brand-Visibility Implications
Sonnet 5 being the default on Claude's Free and Pro tiers matters more for brand visibility than its benchmark scores. The default model is what the large majority of Claude users actually see, so a Sonnet generation change resets brand answers for most of the userbase at once, not just for API customers. Re-run Claude brand baselines against Sonnet 5 rather than carrying Sonnet 4.6 numbers forward. The 1M default context also widens how much retrieved source material reaches the answer, which favours brands with deep, well-structured documentation over those relying on a single strong landing page. How Presenc AI Tracks This Model
Presenc AI monitors brand visibility on Anthropic's Claude 5 series as part of continuous multi-platform AI visibility tracking. We sample Claude Sonnet 5 across representative prompt sets daily, compare against competitor performance on the same prompts, and flag material mention-rate changes so brand teams can respond quickly when AI representation shifts.
