Anthropic has never published an absolute user count for Claude Code. There is no official daily, weekly, or monthly active user number as of October 1, 2026. What Anthropic has disclosed is growth and revenue: on February 12, 2026 it said Claude Code's run-rate revenue had passed $2.5 billion and that weekly active users had doubled since January 1. The best independent measure of reach is the JetBrains Developer Ecosystem Survey, which found that 39 percent of professional developers used Claude Code at work between May and July 2026, up from 18 percent in January.

How Many People Use Claude Code
The direct answer to the user count question is that the number is not public. Anthropic described weekly active users only as a multiple: they doubled in the first six weeks of 2026. Pages that quote a specific weekly figure in the low millions do not link to an Anthropic statement, and we could not find one, so this page does not use those numbers.
Two proxies help. The first is package downloads. The npm registry recorded 55.8 million downloads of the Claude Code package in the 30 days to September 29, 2026. Downloads count installs, updates, and automated build systems, so they overstate people by a wide margin and are useful only as a trend line. The second proxy is survey share, which measures how many developers say they use the tool.
Share Among Coding Agents
| Tool | Used at work, January 2026 | Used at work, May to July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | 18% | 39% |
| GitHub Copilot | 29% | 21% |
| OpenAI Codex | 3% | 16% |
| Cursor | 18% | 12% |
| Google Antigravity | 6% | 6% |
Both columns come from JetBrains. The January wave is the AI Pulse survey of more than 10,000 professional developers. The mid-year wave is the Developer Ecosystem Survey of more than 15,000. In the mid-year data Claude Code adoption was 47 percent in the United States, and 31 percent of all respondents named it their primary tool. The January wave gave it a satisfaction score of 91 percent and a net promoter score of 54.
A separate survey by The Pragmatic Engineer, run from January 27 to February 17, 2026 with 906 respondents, found Claude Code was the most loved tool at 46 percent, ahead of Cursor at 19 percent and GitHub Copilot at 9 percent. A newsletter readership is not a random sample of developers. Among respondents at companies of 1 to 50 people, 75 percent reported using Claude Code.

What Anthropic Has Not Disclosed
- Any absolute user count. No daily, weekly, or monthly active user number for Claude Code has been published.
- A current revenue figure. The Series H announcement in May 2026 gave a company total and no product split.
- Paid seats. Business subscriptions were described as a multiple, not a count.
- The split between subscription and API revenue. Claude Code is sold inside Claude plans and through API usage, and Anthropic does not separate them.
- Retention. No churn or retention data has been released.
Claude across all surfaces is covered in Claude usage statistics.
Brand Visibility Implications
- Coding agents recommend vendors. When a developer asks Claude Code to add payments, authentication, or logging, the agent picks a library or a service and writes the integration. That choice is a brand recommendation made without a search results page.
- The audience is concentrated. A tool used at work by 39 percent of surveyed professional developers is a channel on its own for any developer-facing product.
- Documentation is the input. Agents read docs, package registries, and public repositories. Clear quickstarts and current examples raise the odds of being the default pick.
- Enterprise weight is growing. Anthropic says enterprise use is over half of Claude Code revenue, so the recommendations increasingly land inside large engineering teams.
Methodology
This page is built from company disclosures, regulatory filings, published surveys, and press reporting, not from Presenc AI measurements. Primary sources are used wherever one exists, including Anthropic's Series G and Series H announcements, Cursor's Series D post, Mistral's Series D announcement, Alibaba's December quarter 2025 results, and the public npm download API. Survey and panel data come from JetBrains, The Pragmatic Engineer, and QuestMobile. Where a figure comes only from press coverage, such as The Decoder on OpenAI's DevDay numbers, Dealroom's summary of Forbes on Cursor, or TechNode on QuestMobile, the page says so. Company figures are self-reported and unaudited, and third-party estimates are labelled as estimates. Status as of October 1, 2026.
How Presenc AI Helps
Presenc AI tracks which brands, libraries, and vendors Claude and other assistants recommend on the prompts your buyers and developers use. That shows whether your product is the one an agent reaches for when it writes the integration.
