Amazon's largest agentic commerce move in 2026 is not about Amazon's own store. With Buy for Me, Amazon's AI goes to another merchant's website and completes the purchase there, using the shopper's Amazon address and card. The shopper never leaves the Amazon app. For brands that deliberately stayed off Amazon, Amazon can still be where the customer finds the product and places the order.
The Numbers
| Metric | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Products in Shop Direct from outside merchants | 100+ million | Amazon, March 2026 |
| Merchants represented | More than 400,000 | Amazon, March 2026 |
| Products eligible for Buy for Me | Tens of millions | Amazon, March 2026 |
| Referrals sent to outside stores | Millions | Amazon, March 2026 |
| Feed providers at launch of feed access | Feedonomics, Salsify, CedCommerce | Amazon, TechCrunch |
How It Works
- Shop Direct lists outside products in Amazon search, the Amazon app and Amazon's AI assistant. Tapping through sends the shopper to the merchant's site.
- Buy for Me goes further on eligible items. Amazon's agent, built on Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Nova and Anthropic's Claude models, passes the shopper's encrypted name, address and payment details to the brand's checkout and completes the order.
- The brand is still the merchant of record. The order confirmation comes from the brand, and delivery, returns and customer service stay with the brand. Amazon tracks the order in a "Buy for Me Orders" tab.
- Buy for Me is part of Alexa for Shopping, Amazon's renamed shopping assistant. Amazon says it spans "hundreds of millions of products in Amazon's store and from stores across the web." See Alexa for Shopping statistics.

The Consent Question
Buy for Me started as an opt-out program. Merchants told Modern Retail and GeekWire that their products appeared without permission. Amazon says any business can leave by emailing shopdirect@amazon.com and that removals are prompt. The March feed option partly answers the complaint: a merchant that joins through Feedonomics, Salsify or CedCommerce controls its own price, stock and product details, instead of Amazon working them out from the public site.
The Legal Backdrop
Amazon itself sued Perplexity over the Comet browser shopping on Amazon for its users. A district court blocked Comet from password-protected parts of Amazon.com in March 2026. On August 4, 2026 the Ninth Circuit vacated that injunction. It held that when a user directs an agent through their own device, it is the user who "accesses" the site under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. The court left terms-of-service, contract and tort claims open. Taken together, agents shopping on sites that didn't invite them are now common, and brands have little legal power to stop it.
Brand Visibility Implications
A shopper using Buy for Me never visits your homepage, sees your brand story or reads your reviews. Amazon's agent decides from structured data. If your feed and product pages are accurate, the agent quotes the right price and ships the right variant. If they are wrong, you get an order you can't fulfill, and the complaint is about you, not Amazon. The brands doing best treat Shop Direct as another channel with its own feed, and make their product pages readable by machines. See agent-readable product feeds and which retailers are agent-payable.
Methodology
Figures on this page are drawn from primary announcements and documentation wherever they exist, with established trade and legal press used only to corroborate or to fill gaps a primary source leaves open. Sources: Amazon: Shop Direct feeds, Amazon: Buy for Me, Amazon: Alexa for Shopping, TechCrunch, Modern Retail, Cooley on the Ninth Circuit ruling. Where outlets disagree on a date or number, the page gives the range or names the disagreement rather than choosing one. How Presenc AI Helps
Presenc AI tracks whether shopping assistants, Amazon's included, recommend your products and quote them correctly. It also shows which AI agents are fetching your product pages, so you can spot a new purchasing agent on your site before its orders arrive.
