Which Retailers Are Agent-Payable in 2026?

2026 study of top retailers' readiness for AI agent checkout and payment rails. Modeled from observed agent sessions and public commerce signals.

By Ramanath, CTO & Co-Founder at Presenc AI · Last updated: June 2026

An AI agent can recommend any retailer, but it can only buy from the ones whose checkout it can actually complete. This study scores the readiness of leading retailers for agent-driven checkout and payment in 2026. We define agent-payable as a site where an AI agent can complete a purchase without a human stepping in to clear a captcha, create an account, or re-enter payment details. Across the top 200 retailers we track, only 23% are fully agent-payable today, though another 38% are one fix away. The leaders are not always the biggest names.

Agent-Payable Readiness Among Top Retailers

We group the top 200 retailers by readiness band. Each band reflects how an agent fares attempting a real purchase.

Key Findings

  • Only 23% are fully agent-payable. Most top retailers can be discovered and recommended by agents but cannot yet be transacted with end to end.
  • The login wall is the common near-miss. 38% of retailers are near-ready and blocked mainly by forced account creation, the easiest blocker to remove.
  • Marketplaces lead, luxury lags. Marketplaces score 74 on readiness while luxury sits at 39, leaving high-margin agent demand unserved in premium categories.

Methodology

Data is compiled from the Presenc AI monitoring platform plus public sources, with Presenc AI estimates used where authoritative figures are unavailable. Readiness scores are modeled from observed agent sessions, public commerce signals, and vendor-reported benchmarks. Projections use compound growth modeling. Findings are reviewed quarterly. Frequently Asked Questions

Agent-payable means an AI agent can complete a purchase on the site without a human stepping in to clear a captcha, create an account, or re-enter payment details. In 2026 only 23% of the top 200 retailers we track meet this bar fully. Another 38% are near-ready and blocked by a single fixable issue.
Marketplaces lead with an average readiness score of 74 out of 100, and 41% are fully agent-payable. Luxury and premium retailers lag at a score of 39 with only 9% fully payable, leaving high-margin agent demand largely unserved.
Forced account creation, the login wall, is the most common blocker for the 38% of retailers classed as near-ready. It is also the easiest to fix, and removing it typically lifts agent checkout success from 58% toward the 86% seen at fully payable stores.
Adoption is uneven by segment. 52% of marketplaces have an agent payment rail versus just 11% of luxury retailers. Across all top 200 retailers, fewer than a third currently expose a rail an agent can complete without human intervention.
