Instant Checkout was supposed to make ChatGPT a place where people buy things, not just research them. It lasted about six months. OpenAI launched it in September 2025 with Etsy and Shopify as the headline partners, reports of the pullback surfaced in early March 2026, and by March 24 OpenAI had published its new approach: merchants keep their own checkout, and OpenAI concentrates on product discovery. The retreat says less about AI shopping in general than about where in the journey an assistant actually earns its place.

What the Data Showed
Shoppers did not want to split the cart. Walmart told Modern Retail that items bought directly inside ChatGPT converted at roughly one third the rate of items where shoppers clicked through to Walmart's own site. Walmart's Daniel Danker put it plainly: customers did not want to buy one item in chat when they already had other items waiting in their Walmart cart.
Very few merchants went live. Despite announcements promising a very large merchant catalog, reports of how many actually shipped Instant Checkout range from about a dozen to about 30. Every source agrees the number was tiny relative to the announcement.
Product data was unreliable. Retailers needed real-time inventory, coupons, promotions, loyalty, and store pickup. Instant Checkout supported none of those well, and pricing and stock shown in chat could lag the merchant's own site. Etsy reported millions of listings available and little sales volume through the feature.
OpenAI's own explanation was that the first version "did not offer the level of flexibility" it wanted, which is a polite way of saying the merchant's checkout does many things a chat window cannot.
What Replaced It
Three paths now exist for a merchant that wants to sell through ChatGPT:
- ACP product feeds for discovery. Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair were named as ACP discovery integrations at the March relaunch. Clicking through sends the shopper to the retailer's own checkout. See the ACP merchant adoption tracker.
- ChatGPT apps. Walmart's in-ChatGPT app keeps the shopper inside a Walmart-controlled environment with account linking, loyalty, and Walmart payments. Other large brands with ChatGPT apps include Etsy, Instacart, DoorDash, Expedia, and Lowe's.
- Platform syndication. Shopify Catalog feeds ChatGPT results for Shopify stores by default through Agentic Storefronts. See Shopify's UCP self-serve rollout.
What It Means
The lesson is not that AI shopping failed. It is that the assistant's value sits in the research phase, where shoppers compare options, read summaries, and narrow a shortlist, and that the transaction still belongs where the cart, the loyalty account, and the returns policy already live. That matches Walmart's conversion finding and it matches the wider agentic checkout conversion data. Checkout inside agents will come back, most likely through protocol-based flows like UCP and AP2 that carry loyalty and promotions with them, but the 2026 priority for most brands is simpler: be the product the assistant recommends.
Brand Visibility Implications
With native checkout gone, the moment that decides a ChatGPT sale is the recommendation, not the payment. A brand either appears in the shortlist ChatGPT builds or it does not, and the shopper leaves ChatGPT already decided. That makes feed completeness, accurate pricing, and third-party review coverage the controllable inputs, and it makes share of recommendation on shopping prompts the metric that maps to revenue. Brands that treated Instant Checkout as the thing to prepare for should redirect that work to discovery.
Methodology
Figures on this page come from primary sources wherever one exists: company announcements, developer documentation, and earnings materials, including OpenAI's commerce documentation, the ACP specification repository, Shopify's Spring '26 developer release, Shopify's agent profile docs, and Amazon's Q4 2025 earnings release. Where only trade press reports a figure, such as retailer conversion comparisons from Modern Retail or Digital Commerce 360, the page says so. Where sources disagree, a range is given. Status as of September 2026.
How Presenc AI Helps
Presenc AI tracks how often ChatGPT recommends your products against competitors on the shopping prompts your buyers actually use, and flags when feed or pricing problems cause your products to drop out of those shortlists.
