How to Prepare for AI-Referred Holiday Shoppers in 2026

Why This Season Is Different

Adobe's data, reported on October 29, 2026, shows AI-referred visits to US retail sites in September converted 90% better than other visits and brought 83% more revenue per visit. In August 2025, AI visitors converted 9% worse. Adobe's holiday forecast, published September 28, expects $275.1 billion in US online spending from November 1 to December 31, up 6.7%, with AI-referred traffic up 130% year on year and up 159% on Thanksgiving, 95% on Black Friday and 88% on Cyber Monday. McKinsey's survey of about 21,000 consumers in 11 markets, published October 28, says more than half already use AI for shopping.

Adobe hasn't disclosed what share of total visits AI referrals make up. It is still a small channel, but it is growing fast and now converts better than average.

Step 1: Run Your Gift Prompts Now

Write 20 to 40 prompts the way shoppers ask them: "best gift for a runner under $100", "warm jacket that ships by December 20", "[your product] vs [competitor]". Run them in ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Mode, Perplexity and Copilot. Note who gets named, at what price, and with what shipping claims. Do this before Thanksgiving week, because fixing anything takes time to show up.

Step 2: Fix Your Product Feeds

Assistants pull prices, stock and shipping from merchant feeds and structured data more than from page copy. Make sure your Google Merchant Center and other feeds carry correct holiday prices, stock levels, shipping cut-off dates and return windows. A promotion that lives only in a banner image is invisible to an agent. See optimizing for AI shopping agents.

Step 3: Build Landing Pages for AI Visitors

Adobe found AI-referred visitors spend 73% longer on site and view 25% more pages, and their add-to-cart rate is 53% higher. They arrive having already compared options, so they want confirmation, not a pitch. Make the price, delivery date, return policy and the one or two reasons to pick you visible without scrolling.

Step 4: Check Checkout Paths

Some assistants can now complete purchases. Know which ones can buy from you, and test the flow end to end. See which AI assistants can check out. If an agent fails at your checkout, the sale goes to a competitor whose checkout works.

Step 5: Plan for Ads in AI Answers

Google now sells ads in AI Mode in the US and ten more countries, including multiturn ads in follow-up questions in the US. If competitors buy those placements for holiday queries, your organic mention shares the answer with their ad. See advertising on Google AI Mode.

Step 6: Tag and Measure AI Traffic

Set up referrer segments for chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and others before November. Track conversion rate and revenue per visit for that segment separately, so you can compare against Adobe's figures. Much AI-influenced buying arrives as direct or branded search with no AI referrer, so read the segment as a floor, not the full effect.

Product feeds. Assistants rely on feeds and structured data for price, stock, shipping cut-offs and returns, so errors there cost you recommendations faster than anything on the page.
Segment traffic by AI referrers such as chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com and perplexity.ai and track conversion and revenue per visit for that segment. Treat it as a minimum, because many AI-influenced visits arrive as direct traffic.
