Definition
A multiturn ad is a sponsored placement that can show up in a follow-up question, not only in the first answer of an AI conversation. In a classic search, each query is a fresh results page with its own ads. In an AI conversation, the second and third questions build on the first, so an ad that only appears on turn one misses most of the session. Google's October 28, 2026 Ads announcement described multiturn ads as a way "to allow ads in follow-up queries in AI Mode".
Where They Run
As of the October 28 announcement, multiturn ads are US only. Ads in AI Mode more generally are live in the US and were expanded the same day to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. Google says ads are "clearly labeled as 'Sponsored.'"
Why the Follow-Up Turn Matters
Sundar Pichai said on the Q3 2026 earnings call that AI Mode queries are three times longer on average than traditional searches, and that one in five involves voice, images or documents. Longer, more specific follow-ups are where buying intent sharpens: "which of these ships to Canada" or "which one has a lifetime warranty". An ad on that turn reaches a narrower, warmer audience than one on the opening question.
Google also says click-through rates are already similar for sponsored and organic product listings within AI Mode, based on its own US data from August 20 to September 3, 2026. That is a vendor figure with no outside check.
What It Changes for Organic Visibility
Organic recommendations now share the follow-up turn with paid ones. A brand that is named in the first answer but drops out of the follow-ups can be replaced by a competitor's ad at the point of decision. Track your organic presence across a conversation, not just on the first prompt, and see how to advertise on Google AI Mode for the paid side.
