Grok 4.7 has a 500,000-token context window and a May 2026 knowledge cutoff, and costs $2 input and $6 output per million tokens. Grok's context window has gone down over time, which is rare among the major vendors. It peaked at 2M tokens with the Fast models in late 2025, sat at 1M for Grok 4.3, and has been 500K since Grok 4.5. xAI appears to have traded window size for speed and cost on coding work. Prices are per million tokens. The rows from Grok 4.20 onward come from xAI's model list as it stood on October 1, 2026. The path has not been a straight decline. Grok 4.5 raised the price from the Grok 4.3 level while halving the context window. Grok 4.7 Fast runs at about twice the output speed for twice the price.
X Integration and Ownership
Grok began as a feature of X. Grok-1 was available only to X Premium+ subscribers, and standalone web and mobile apps followed. xAI acquired X Corp. on March 28, 2025. SpaceX acquired xAI on February 2, 2026, the company was renamed SpaceXAI in July 2026, and its purchase of Cursor closed on August 14, 2026. What Is Next
Grok 5. There is no official release date. xAI said in its Series E announcement on January 28, 2026 that Grok 5 was in training on its Colossus 2 cluster. According to OrcaRouter's tracker, Elon Musk said on August 5, 2026 that Grok 4.6 and 4.7 would come first and Grok 5 before the end of the year. Grok 4.6 arrived the following week and Grok 4.7 on September 21. Earlier targets for Grok 5, the end of 2025 and then the first quarter of 2026 as reported by 36Kr, were missed, so treat the year-end target as a claim.
Specifications. Parameter counts and context sizes in circulation for Grok 5 come from Musk's remarks and community posts, not from xAI documentation. We do not list them.
Brand Visibility Implications
- Grok has a knowledge cutoff like any other model. xAI lists May 2026 for Grok 4.7, and December 2025 was given for Grok 4.3. Live X and web search fill the gap after that date, but what Grok knows about a brand without searching is fixed at training time.
- Releases come about every six weeks. Grok 4.5, 4.6, and 4.7 shipped between July 8 and September 21. A baseline taken in June describes a model three versions old.
- Five versions are on the API at once. Grok 4.20 and 4.3 stay available at a lower price, so cost-sensitive products will keep using them along with their older cutoffs.
- A smaller window means less retrieved material per answer. At 500K tokens, and with a surcharge from 200K, long research runs carry fewer sources. Being among the first results retrieved matters more.
