Agent Checkout Success Rate Benchmarks 2026

2026 benchmarks for AI agent checkout success rates and the top failure causes. Modeled from observed agent checkout attempts and vendor data.

By Ramanath, CTO & Co-Founder at Presenc AI · Last updated: June 2026

Getting an agent to the checkout page is the easy part. Completing the transaction is where agentic commerce still breaks. This report benchmarks 2026 agent checkout success rates, defined as the share of agent checkout attempts that finish in a confirmed order, and ranks the failure causes that block the rest. Across our panel, the average agent checkout succeeds 61% of the time, but the spread is enormous: agent-ready merchants clear 88% while the least prepared sit below 30%. The single largest blocker is not payment at all, it is the human-verification wall.

Checkout Success Rate by Merchant Tier

We segment merchants by how prepared their checkout is for automated sessions, from fully agent-ready to no accommodation at all.

Top Causes of Checkout Failure

When an agent checkout fails, these are the proximate causes ranked by share of failed attempts.

Key Findings

  • Captcha is the number one blocker. Bot challenges account for 31% of failed agent checkouts and are rarely recoverable, since they are designed to stop exactly this traffic.
  • Readiness is a 4x lever. Agent-ready merchants complete 88.4% of checkouts versus 21.4% for account-required flows, a difference that maps directly to revenue.
  • Payment rails matter. Adding an agent-payable rail such as the x402 pattern lifts completion from the low 50s to the high 80s in our modeled cohort.

Methodology

Data is compiled from the Presenc AI monitoring platform plus public sources, with Presenc AI estimates used where authoritative figures are unavailable. Agent transaction metrics are modeled from observed agent checkout attempts and vendor-reported benchmarks. Projections use compound growth modeling. Findings are reviewed quarterly. How Presenc AI Helps

Most checkout failures are fixable once you can see them. Presenc AI identifies which AI agents reach your checkout, which step they fail on, and how your success rate compares to your category. Track which AI agents hit your site and run an agent-payable readiness check to convert blocked carts into confirmed orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Across our panel the average agent checkout succeeds 61% of the time. The range is wide: agent-ready merchants complete 88.4% of attempts while account-required flows complete only 21.4%. The difference is driven almost entirely by friction the merchant can remove.
Captcha and bot challenges are the top cause at 31% of failed checkouts and are rarely recoverable. Forced account creation follows at 22%, and price or availability mismatch at checkout accounts for another 17%. Together these three causes explain 70% of failures.
Yes. In our modeled cohort, adding an agent-payable rail such as the x402 pattern lifts checkout completion from the low 50s to the high 80s percent. The rail removes payment-method rejection, which causes 14% of failures, and shortens the median number of attempts needed to one.
On agent-ready sites the median is 1.1 attempts, meaning agents usually succeed first try. On captcha-gated sites that climbs to 3.1 attempts, and 58% of agents abandon after the first failure rather than retry.
