Why This Comparison Matters

ChatGPT is not available in mainland China. For brands with any material Chinese-market exposure, consumer goods, luxury, tourism, enterprise tech, education, investment, visibility on Chinese LLM platforms is not a nice-to-have but a primary channel. Three Chinese LLM families dominate the landscape: Qwen (Alibaba), Kimi (Moonshot AI), and DeepSeek. For context, other Chinese LLM families that we cover but consider secondary for most brands include Zhipu GLM/ChatGLM, Yi (01.AI), Baichuan, and Tencent Hunyuan. Each is significant in specific niches but has smaller direct consumer and enterprise footprint than Qwen, Kimi, and DeepSeek.

Kimi wins. Kimi's long-context positioning and research-assistant UX make it the default choice for long-document workflows in China. Qwen and DeepSeek both handle long documents but Kimi's UX is purpose-built for the use case.

DeepSeek (with R1) tends to win. R1's reasoning strength and DeepSeek's strong code corpus make it the technical-audience default. Qwen QwQ is competitive on reasoning specifically but DeepSeek's broader positioning for developers is stronger.
