Computer Use Is Architecturally Different from Operator

Anthropic's Computer Use launched in public beta in October 2024 and has expanded steadily through 2025 and into 2026, with broader availability tied to Claude's tool-use API. The headline difference from OpenAI's Operator is architectural: Computer Use is a capability available to any Claude application that uses the tool-use API, not a single product surface. That means the brand-visibility implications differ depending on which Claude-powered application is doing the buying.

This page focuses on the most common flow: Claude (via claude.ai or a third-party Claude wrapper) using Computer Use to perform purchases on behalf of a user. We cover Claude's safety-driven authorization checkpoints, the patterns we see in brand selection, and what these mean for brands that want to appear and convert in Computer Use sessions.

Authorization Checkpoints Slow Conversions

Claude's constitutional safety layer surfaces explicitly during commerce flows. By default Claude Computer Use will not complete a purchase without confirming the order details with the user (item, quantity, price, shipping, total). This is unlike Operator, which can complete in autopilot for some flows once user authorization has been given upfront.

For brands, the practical consequence is that Computer Use sessions have a longer dwell-time on the checkout review page than Operator sessions do. The user, not the agent, makes the final commit. This raises two visibility questions. First, what does the order review page actually show? If your checkout page hides the brand name behind a SKU, hides shipping cost behind a click, or buries return policies in a footer, Claude will surface these omissions to the user, and conversion rates drop. Second, how clearly is the brand identified at the moment of decision? Brands that appear as ambiguous third-party sellers in marketplaces lose more often in Computer Use review steps than they do in human checkout.

Claude's Brand-Selection Bias

Claude has known biases in candidate generation that carry through to Computer Use. Compared to ChatGPT, Claude tends to surface fewer brands in its initial recommendation set, with more weight given to brands that have clear, consistent, and authoritative web presence. The implication is that Computer Use candidate sets are smaller and more concentrated at the top end. If your brand is not in Claude's recommendation distribution for the relevant query, it is essentially invisible to Computer Use for that query.

The candidate sets are also more sensitive to source quality. Claude tends to weight Wikipedia, established editorial sources, and primary brand domains over aggregator sites. For brands, this means the recipe to appear in Claude is different from the recipe to appear in ChatGPT: investments in primary editorial coverage, Wikipedia entity work, and clear authoritative content on the brand domain pay off more in Claude than they do in ChatGPT.

What Computer Use Does Well in Commerce

Computer Use handles structured B2B and prosumer flows reliably: SaaS sign-up, subscription management, complex multi-step procurement on enterprise platforms. It handles consumer-style impulse purchases less reliably, partly because of the authorization checkpoints and partly because Claude's tone in user dialogue tends to slow down rather than push through ambiguous decisions. The brand-visibility implication is that B2B brands and prosumer SaaS get more relative visibility from Computer Use traffic than retail consumer brands do, when normalised for total session count.

Pages That Survive Claude's Review Step

The pages that perform well in the Computer Use review step share four properties. First, brand identity is visible above the fold on the order summary page, not hidden behind a SKU or a marketplace seller name. Second, total cost is fully itemised before the final confirmation, not revealed only after submission. Third, return and cancellation terms are linked from the order summary in a way that Claude can summarise to the user without leaving the page. Fourth, structured data (Schema.org Order, Offer) is correctly marked up so Claude can verify the order matches what was promised in the candidate stage.

Pages that lack any of these properties see disproportionate handbacks at the review step. The handback rate in our observed sample is roughly 2x to 3x higher for pages that fail any single one of these four properties, compared to pages that satisfy all four. The compound effect is that the worst-instrumented commerce pages essentially never convert in Computer Use, even when the brand wins the candidate-generation step.
