The Short Version
Apple's October 27-28, 2026 launches gave the 14-inch MacBook Pro two very different entry points for running AI models locally. The M6 model starts at $1,999 with 16 GB, configurable to 32 GB, at 170 GB/s. The M5 Pro PROLED model starts at $2,899 and takes up to 64 GB at 307 GB/s. Both ship November 6. If you plan to run local models seriously, the M5 Pro's extra memory matters more than anything else on the spec sheet.
Side by Side
| 14-inch MacBook Pro, M6 | 14-inch MacBook Pro, M5 Pro (PROLED) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting price | $1,999 | $2,899 |
| Unified memory | 16 GB base, up to 32 GB | Up to 64 GB |
| Memory bandwidth | 170 GB/s | 307 GB/s |
| Chip | 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU | M5 Pro |
| Display | Standard | Tandem OLED with touch |
The M6 is the newer generation, but it is the base chip. The M5 Pro is a tier up, with almost twice the bandwidth. Newer is not faster here.
What Each Can Run
| Model class at 4-bit | M6, 16 GB | M6, 32 GB | M5 Pro, 64 GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small models, 3B to 8B (2 to 5 GB) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Gemma 4 26B-A4B MoE (about 15 GB) | Tight | Yes | Yes |
| About 30B dense (about 18 GB) | No | Yes, short context | Yes |
| About 70B dense (about 40 GB) | No | No | Yes |
macOS and your other apps need memory too, so treat about 70% of the total as usable for a model.
Speed
The M5 Pro's 307 GB/s gives it about 1.8 times the token-speed ceiling of the M6 on the same model. Mixture-of-experts models with few active parameters, such as Gemma 4 26B-A4B, run well on either, because each token reads only about 4B parameters. Dense 30B models will feel slow on the M6. See unified memory bandwidth.
Which to Buy
- M6 with 32 GB: you want a good laptop that also runs small and mid-size MoE models for private drafting, coding help and testing. Skip the 16 GB base if local AI is a reason to buy.
- M5 Pro with 64 GB: you want 70B-class models locally, or you test how open models describe your brand and need more than one loaded.
- M5 Max with 128 GB: covered in M5 Max vs M5 Ultra.
