Every AI answer is built on a small set of sources the model trusts. Understanding which domains earn that trust is the foundation of any AI visibility strategy, because getting represented on a high-trust domain can do more for your AI presence than any amount of owned content. This study ranks the most-trusted domains in AI answers in 2026, measured by how often each is cited across major platforms.
Top Domains by AI Citation Share
Citation share is the percentage of cited sources, across a broad prompt set, that come from a given domain. The table below ranks the highest-trust domains overall, with their citation share and a sense of how broadly they are relied upon across categories.
| Domain | Overall Citation Share | Category Breadth | Trust Tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| wikipedia.org | 14.2% | Very broad | Tier 1 |
| reddit.com | 9.6% | Broad | Tier 1 |
| youtube.com | 6.8% | Broad | Tier 2 |
| github.com | 5.1% | Technical | Tier 2 |
| nytimes.com | 3.9% | News and reference | Tier 1 |
| g2.com | 3.2% | Software | Tier 2 |
How Domain Trust Shifts by Platform
The same domain can be a heavyweight on one assistant and a minor source on another. The next table shows citation share for four high-trust domains across the leading platforms, revealing how each model's grounding preferences differ.
| Domain | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Gemini | Claude |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| wikipedia.org | 13% | 11% | 16% | 18% |
| reddit.com | 8% | 13% | 10% | 6% |
| youtube.com | 5% | 7% | 12% | 4% |
| github.com | 6% | 5% | 4% | 9% |
Key Findings
- Wikipedia leads every platform. At 14.2% overall citation share, Wikipedia is the single most-trusted domain in AI answers, peaking at 18% on Claude.
- Reddit is the trust surprise. Community discussion earned 9.6% overall share and topped 13% on Perplexity, reflecting how much models value firsthand experience.
- Trust is platform specific. GitHub carries 9% share on Claude but only 4% on Gemini, so a single source can have very different value depending on the assistant.
- The top tier is concentrated. The six leading domains together accounted for roughly 43% of all citations in the tracked prompt set.
Methodology
Data was compiled from the Presenc AI monitoring platform through continuous prompt testing across major AI platforms, with source-level logging of every cited domain. We computed citation share against the full prompt set and broke it out by platform. Where direct measurement was unavailable we used public sources and Presenc AI estimates, and projections use compound growth modeling. Figures are reviewed quarterly. Last update June 2026.
