AI Citation Statistics by Industry 2026: Cross-Sector Benchmark

Citation behaviour by AI platforms varies sharply by industry. A typical query in one vertical might earn 7 source citations from primarily editorial sources; the same query format in another vertical might earn 3 citations dominated by company-owned content. Understanding sector-specific citation patterns is essential for building a realistic GEO benchmark and target. This page compiles citation data across 14 industries based on a Presenc AI panel of 38,000 sector-tagged prompts sampled monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini AI Overviews, and Claude.

Industry Patterns That Stand Out

Manufacturing and industrial have the highest brand-owned citation share (41 percent). AI platforms cite manufacturer datasheets, specification pages, and technical documentation directly because few neutral third-party sources publish equivalent depth. Building structured product data is therefore disproportionately high-leverage for industrial brands.

E-commerce and travel are dominated by review and comparison sites (41 and 38 percent respectively). Brands in these sectors cannot rely on their own websites alone, they need explicit visibility in third-party review ecosystems (Wirecutter, Tripadvisor, G2 for B2C SaaS, etc.).

Healthcare and pharma earn the highest editorial and news citation share (27 percent), and the lowest UGC share (3 percent). AI platforms apply more conservative source standards in regulated medical queries, favouring published research, government health sites, and major medical publications.

Crypto and blockchain have the highest UGC citation share (17 percent). Reddit and crypto-specific forums are unusually well-represented in AI answers about crypto projects, which means community presence is a measurable AI-visibility lever in this category.

What This Means for Industry GEO Strategy

Effective GEO strategy is industry-specific. The same tactic that produces strong results in manufacturing (deep brand-owned product pages) under-delivers in e-commerce (where review-site placement matters more than your own product detail pages). Brands should:

  1. Identify the citation-source mix for their industry from the table above.
  2. Audit their current presence in each citation type (brand pages, review and comparison sites, editorial, UGC).
  3. Prioritise gap-filling investments in the highest-share citation types for their industry.
  4. Avoid over-investing in low-share citation types unless there is a defensible niche reason.

Methodology

Citation data comes from a Presenc AI panel of 38,000 sector-tagged prompts sampled monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini AI Overviews, and Claude. Industry classification follows a 14-category taxonomy mapped from major industry coding systems (NAICS, SIC, ICB). Citation source classification uses a hybrid model and human review of edge cases. Figures are averages across the four platforms; per-platform variation is meaningful and is tracked separately. Updated quarterly. Last update: April 2026.

How Presenc AI Helps

Frequently Asked Questions

Citation behaviour reflects what authoritative content exists in each sector. Manufacturing has deep technical documentation and few independent reviewers, so AI platforms cite manufacturer datasheets directly. E-commerce has rich third-party review ecosystems, so AI platforms favour Wirecutter and similar over brand pages. Healthcare has high regulatory standards, so AI platforms favour published research and government sources over UGC.
It depends on industry. Manufacturers, legal services, and real estate brands earn the largest share of citations from their own websites, so brand-owned content is the highest-leverage investment. E-commerce and travel brands earn most citations from review sites, so third-party review presence matters more. The right mix is industry-specific, there is no single answer.
The Presenc AI industry citation benchmark is recomputed monthly from a panel of 38,000 sector-tagged prompts. The published page is updated quarterly to reflect material changes. AI platforms continue to evolve their citation behaviour, so the benchmark itself is a moving target, current quarter values matter more than year-over-year comparisons.
