Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. Duet is a separate app in which Claude works as a proactive agent: it checks connected accounts every few hours, brings up what needs attention, and keeps working when the user steps away. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, and it asks before it sends, pays, signs, or deletes anything. Anthropic built it for professionals and small business owners.

What It Can Do Without Asking
Duet reads and drafts on its own. Before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document, or deleting anything, it shows the action and waits. Some actions are not allowed even with approval, including trading securities and moving money between accounts. Anthropic also says it can misread a thread or misjudge urgency.
How It Buys Things
Duet can buy through Link, Stripe's digital wallet. It confirms the item, Link requires the user's approval, and payment uses a virtual card. It can also check out at online stores with Shop Pay, and Shopify says this extends to brands that are not on Shopify. See which AI assistants can check out.

Brand Visibility Implications
- Small business software is the first test. The named connectors are accounting, CRM, payroll, and messaging tools. A Duet user is likely to ask about vendors they already pay, and connected vendors can be used directly.
- The agent sees your bills as well as your marketing. Agents with access to email and accounting can notice renewals and compare options. That is our inference from what Duet connects to, and Anthropic has not described this use.

- It is still small. A US waitlist preview will not move your numbers yet. Plan for it, and do not report on it.
