Google shipped Deep Research and Deep Research Max on Gemini 3.1 Pro in April 2026. These are not chat features. They are autonomous agents that spend 5 to 30 minutes per query navigating the web, fetching primary sources, synthesizing across documents, and delivering a citation-rich research brief. They support custom user-uploaded documents, native chart generation from retrieved data, and MCP API integration for connecting to internal tools. For brands, this is a new visibility surface that operates on different principles than chat or AI Overviews.

What Deep Research actually does

A user types a research question (typical examples from the launch: "compare the agentic frameworks shipping in 2026 with their licensing implications" or "analyze the AI visibility tooling market and identify the top 5 vendors with their differentiators"). Gemini 3.1 Pro decomposes the question into a research plan, fetches an iterative set of web sources, takes notes, and produces a 5-15 page brief with inline citations.

2. Audit your top-of-funnel pages for synthesizability. Specific numbers, structured pricing, clear feature claims, schema.org markup. If a 20-second skim does not yield a quotable claim, the agent will skip it.

3. If you have an MCP server, register it with the Gemini MCP directory and make sure your tool descriptions match how Workspace users phrase requests. If you do not have an MCP server, this is one more reason to ship one.
